What is Moodle?

From Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moodle)

''Moodle'' is an open source e-learning platform. It has a very large user base with 7,954 registered sites. in 146 countries with over 2 million users in more than 189,000 courses (as of December 16, 2005).  Moodle is a software package designed to help educators create quality online courses. Such e-learning systems are sometimes also called a Learning Management System (LMS), Course Management System (CMS), Virtual Learning Environments (VLE), education via computer-mediated communication (CMC) or just Online Education.

Hear from Moodle founder, Martin Dougiamas, on the Saavy Technologist blogsite, posted by Tim Wilson, Technology Integration Specialist (and Moodle user) at the Hopkins School District in Hopkins, MN.

"Moodle has a very large, active community of people who are using the system and developing new features and enhancements. You can access this community at http://www.moodle.org/ and enroll in the Using Moodle course. There youŐll find people who are more than willing to help new users get up and running, troubleshoot, and effectively use Moodle. As of this writing, there are 4,000 people enrolled in the Moodle community and over 3,000 Moodle sites in 112 countries. The global community has also translated Moodle into 40 languages." (Using Moodle, Teaching with the Popular Open Source Course Management System, Jason Cole, O'Reilly Press.)
